Ghana’s aviation hub status enhanced with new ET Accra-Toronto flight
THE Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has revealed that Ethiopian Airlines will launch a direct flight from Accra to Toronto, Canada, in the first quarter of 2025.
This significant move by Ethiopian Airlines, a key player in Africa’s aviation industry, is expected to enhance connectivity between West Africa and North America, offering travellers more options and bolstering Accra’s status as a major aviation hub in the region.
Mrs. Opare highlighted this development during the culmination of a month-long clean-up initiative at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and other regional airports across the country. She emphasized that the addition of the Accra-Toronto route aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to improve air travel and attract more international airlines.
In addition to Ethiopian Airlines’ new route, Mrs. Opare announced that Virgin Atlantic Airlines is in the final stages of returning to the Ghanaian market. The re-entry of Virgin Atlantic will further diversify travel options and enhance competition within the sector.
During the event, Mrs. Opare also introduced a new QR code system designed to allow the public and stakeholders to report issues at the airport, aiming to improve customer service and operational efficiency.
She praised the airport staff for their active participation in the clean-up exercise, encouraging them to maintain high standards of cleanliness, citing the adage, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” Mrs. Opare also noted a significant increase in both international and domestic passenger traffic, surpassing pre-COVID levels, and expressed optimism for continued growth.
The clean-up initiative, which took place every Friday in August, involved management and staff dedicating an hour to walk through the terminals and airport environs. This effort was part of a broader strategy to enhance the overall travel experience by identifying and addressing any issues in the passenger journey.
