IMF: Current conditions in Syria hinder economic assessment
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that it is too early to conduct an economic assessment of Syria, citing the fluid nature of the situation in that country.
At a recent press briefing, the IMF’s Director of Communications, Ms. Julie Kozack, expressed the institution’s concerns over the prolonged suffering of the Syrian people and highlighted the need for the nation to address its pressing humanitarian, social, and economic challenges.
“The Syrian people have endured hardship for far too long,” Ms. Kozack said. She emphasized the importance of Syria taking steps toward economic rehabilitation, adding that the IMF has not had substantial engagement with the country since its last Article IV consultation in 2009.
While the IMF is closely monitoring developments in Syria, Ms. Kozack noted that current conditions make it premature to undertake an economic assessment. The Fund, however, expressed its readiness to collaborate with the international community to support Syria’s reconstruction efforts when conditions improve.
The IMF’s position underscores the complexity of addressing Syria’s economic challenges, which are deeply intertwined with the nation’s humanitarian and social crises, as well as the need for stable conditions to facilitate international assistance.
