AT champions female empowerment in ICT: CEO advocates for tech education among young women

AT, formerly AirtelTigo, is doubling down on its commitment to empower young women in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Leo Skarlatos, Chief Executive Officer of AT, recently highlighted the critical importance of bridging the gender gap in technology and providing equal opportunities for young women through initiatives like “Girls in ICT.”

Speaking during an event that hosted 100 Junior High School students from the Savannah, Northern, and Eastern regions at AT’s headquarters, Skarlatos emphasized the rapidly evolving digital landscape. “In today’s world, it is crucial that we bridge the gender gap and provide equal opportunities for all. The Girls in ICT project is designed to inspire and equip young women with the skills and confidence needed to pursue careers in technology,” he stated.

Skarlatos further underscored the business case for diversity in ICT, noting that it drives innovation. “By fostering an inclusive environment and offering mentorship, training, and resources, we aim to break down barriers and create a more diverse and innovative ICT sector. We believe that diversity drives innovation, and we are dedicated to supporting the next generation of female leaders.”

The event was an opportunity for the young women to gain firsthand insight into the ICT industry, with this year’s theme, “Leadership,” focusing on nurturing the next generation of female tech leaders. The students participated in various interactive sessions on digitalization, networks, data analytics, and cybersecurity, designed to provide practical knowledge and spark their interest in ICT.

Evelyn Sam, Chief Supply Chain Officer at AT, shared her personal career journey, illustrating the potential for growth within the ICT sector. “My journey has not been easy, but with determination and a passion for learning, I was able to achieve my goals. Taking ICT-related courses seriously will equip you with the skills needed to excel in the future,” Sam advised the students, encouraging them to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them.

Other notable speakers, including Ama Edjah, Acting Chief Finance Officer, and Cynthia Degbor Akafia, Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs at AT, also stressed the importance of ICT education and shared practical steps to help the students deepen their knowledge in the field.

This event is part of AT’s broader strategy to enhance its corporate social responsibility initiatives while simultaneously fostering a pipeline of diverse talent that could benefit the company in the long term. By investing in young women’s education and training in ICT, AT is positioning itself as a forward-thinking company that recognizes the value of diversity and inclusion in driving business growth and innovation.

The students and their teachers expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to engage with industry professionals and gain insights into the latest technological advancements. They lauded AT’s efforts to not only educate but also inspire the next generation of female leaders in technology.

As AT continues to support initiatives like Girls in ICT, the company is setting a strong precedent for other organizations in Ghana and beyond to follow, reinforcing the critical role of businesses in shaping the future of technology and creating a more inclusive and equitable industry.
