ICMPD and GIS hold workshop to enhance Ghana’s border security and emergency response
The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), has conducted a three-day workshop aimed at strengthening border security and emergency response capabilities in Ghana.
The event, part of the Strengthening Border Security Ghana project, took place at the Gonokrom Sector Command in the Dormaa district of the Bono Region and brought together over 60 representatives from key agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The workshop focused on equipping border management institutions with the skills necessary to handle emergencies at Ghana’s borders. Participants engaged in both theoretical sessions and hands-on simulation exercises, covering areas such as risk assessment, crisis management, and emergency response planning. The training emphasized the importance of interagency collaboration in maintaining effective operations during crises.
Ms. Iulia Jolley-Socea, Project Manager of the SBS Project and ICMPD Ghana, highlighted the significance of the workshop, stating that it is essential for Ghana to be well-prepared and coordinated in managing emergencies. She noted that the SBS project is committed to enhancing the capacity of the GIS and other agencies to address cross-border crimes and security challenges.
The Strengthening Border Security Ghana project, funded by the European Union’s Emergency Funding for Africa, is designed to bolster Ghana’s national emergency response framework, positioning the GIS as a leading institution in handling potential contingencies.
