Eni Showcases Strong Climate Commitments in 2024 Report, Highlights Progress in Just Energy Transition

Global energy giant Eni has published its latest voluntary sustainability report, “Eni for 2024 – A Just Transition,” outlining the company’s key achievements and forward-looking strategies aimed at driving a more sustainable and inclusive energy future.
Now in its nineteenth edition, the report details Eni’s progress in combining industrial growth with environmental stewardship and social impact. The company revealed substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, innovative green energy projects, and renewed efforts to support communities in the 21 countries where it operates.
“In 2024, we continued on our path of transformation and achieved concrete results,” said Claudio Descalzi, Eni CEO. “The ability to anticipate and respond to global change through innovation and sustainability is what defines us.”
Major Emissions Reductions and Green Energy Push
Among the key highlights, Eni reported a 55% reduction in net Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its upstream operations and a 37% overall reduction compared to 2018. The company reaffirmed its target of near-zero methane emissions by 2030 and aims to achieve water positivity at 30% of its sites in high-stress areas by 2035.
Through Plenitude—its renewable energy and electric mobility arm—Eni surpassed 4 GW in installed renewable capacity and plans to hit 15 GW by 2030. The unit now serves 10 million customers and operates 21,000 EV charging points globally.
Enilive, its mobility-focused division, also expanded its biofuel operations, reaching 1.65 million tonnes in biorefining capacity in 2024, with a goal to exceed 5 million tonnes by 2030, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production.
Innovation and Inclusion at the Core
The report also spotlights Eni’s investments in cutting-edge technologies, including commissioning the HPC6 supercomputer and launching Eniquantic, its quantum computing venture. Eni is also transforming its traditional operations, such as converting the Livorno refinery into a biorefinery and repositioning chemical subsidiary Versalis for long-term sustainability.
The company’s Just Transition strategy continues to be grounded in respect for human rights, workplace safety, and community engagement. Notable actions in 2024 included initiatives to prevent gender-based violence and partnerships with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to promote safe, inclusive working conditions across the agri-feedstock supply chain.
Local Development and Global Vision
Through over 100 local development projects, Eni continued to invest in health, water access, energy, and education initiatives, aligning closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These efforts underscore Eni’s vision of delivering shared value while driving the global energy transition.
Eni’s decision to maintain its voluntary Eni for report alongside mandatory EU disclosures under the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) reflects its commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement.
