Ghana Closes Embassy in Iran, Begins Evacuation of Nationals Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict

The Government of Ghana has announced the closure of its embassy in Tehran and the immediate evacuation of all Ghanaian nationals from Iran, citing rising tensions in the Middle East following ongoing military strikes between Israel and Iran.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the government said the decision was taken as part of measures to safeguard the lives of Ghanaians in the affected areas.
“In the interest of protecting Ghanaian lives, the Mahama administration has decided to evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following the escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” the statement noted. The evacuation operation, which will be conducted via land borders, covers Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other citizens residing in Iran.
At the same time, the government announced that operations at Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, have been scaled down to the “barest minimum” to ensure the safety of diplomatic staff while maintaining essential services.
In a separate communication, Ghana expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the region. The government urged all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and to embrace diplomatic channels to de-escalate tensions.
“Ghana calls upon the parties to reaffirm their commitment to the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law,” the statement added.
The government emphasized its unwavering commitment to protecting the lives of its nationals and pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely.
