Govt Inaugurates New GNPC Board to Drive Energy Sector Growth

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has inaugurated a newly reconstituted Board of Directors for the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), with a strong call for bold leadership, strategic reforms, and a renewed focus on sustainability and productivity.

Describing GNPC as a national asset central to Ghana’s energy future, Mr. Jinapor stressed that the Corporation must be repositioned to lead the country’s energy security agenda and drive economic transformation.

“GNPC is not just another state-owned institution—it is the flagship of Ghana’s upstream oil and gas sector. Through prudent investments and smart partnerships, it has a direct impact on national development,” the Minister said during the inauguration ceremony.

He urged the new board to exhibit visionary leadership and ensure strategic oversight, transparency, and accountability. With the global energy landscape shifting rapidly, the Minister emphasized that GNPC must evolve to remain competitive and relevant.

The Minister particularly noted the need to strengthen the Corporation’s operational arm, Explorco, to enhance Ghana’s exploration and production capabilities. “Support the government’s ambition to build a stronger, more independent GNPC. The opportunities are there, but it will require bold decisions,” he said.

Mr. Jinapor also announced plans to review and modernize the GNPC Act, originally passed in 1983, to align with current industry realities and global best practices. “Oil production in Ghana has declined in recent years. Our reserves are a concern. However, with renewed interest from supermajors, this is the right moment to reset GNPC’s trajectory,” he noted.

Board Chairman Pledges Performance and Collaboration

Newly appointed Board Chairman, Prof. Joseph Oteng-Adjei, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the appointment and pledged to lead a focused, results-oriented team.

“This is a team of accomplished professionals. We are humbled by the trust placed in us and ready to work collaboratively to reposition GNPC. We’ll also maintain close alignment with the Ministry and draw on its guidance as needed,” he said.

The new board is expected to play a central role in implementing reforms aimed at expanding domestic exploration, deepening private sector partnerships, and enhancing operational efficiency.
