Affordable and reliable, Chinese cars capture Ghanaian market
CHINESE automobiles are steadily winning the hearts of Ghanaians, according to Fan Dongyun, Deputy Managing Director of Zonda Ghana Limited, a Chinese automobile assembly company.
Fan made the remarks during a customer appreciation event held Friday night in Accra, celebrating the growing patronage of Zonda’s premium vehicle brands in Ghana.
Fan highlighted the increasing demand for Zonda’s locally assembled vehicles, which include sport utility vehicles (SUVs), pickup trucks, cross-country vehicles, tipper trucks, and earth-moving machinery.
Since the company introduced models from China’s Great Wall Motors in June 2024, sales have seen a significant uptick, with Ghanaians showing particular interest in the vehicles’ affordability and suitability for local terrain.
To further meet this growing demand, Zonda unveiled two new vehicle models during the event, signaling its commitment to expanding its offerings in the Ghanaian market.
Impact of VAT exemption
Fan attributed part of the company’s success to the Ghanaian government’s removal of value-added tax (VAT) on vehicle assembly, a policy she said has made vehicles more affordable and accessible to Ghanaians.
“The zero-VAT policy on vehicle assembly has been instrumental in driving our sales and making quality vehicles available to more Ghanaians,” Fan stated. She expressed confidence that the tax exemption, combined with Zonda’s focus on producing vehicles designed for African conditions, would ensure continued high patronage of its products.
Job creation and technology transfer
Fan also emphasized Zonda’s contributions to the local economy through job creation and technology transfer. By assembling vehicles locally, the company has provided employment opportunities for Ghanaians while building the capacity of the local workforce through skills development in automotive technology.
Customer endorsements
Kwabena Amaning, a senior manager at Ghana’s Imperial Insurance, commended Zonda for its reliability and affordability in the automobile sector.
“With Zonda, you can always find the vehicle you need at an affordable price. Their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is evident in their track record,” Amaning said.
A growing presence in the market
As Chinese automobiles continue to gain traction in Ghana, Zonda’s efforts to introduce new models and tailor its vehicles to local needs reflect a broader trend of Chinese manufacturers deepening their presence in African markets.
Fan concluded the event by expressing gratitude to Zonda’s customers and reaffirming the company’s commitment to providing quality, affordable, and durable vehicles to Ghanaians.
With the Ghanaian automobile market rapidly evolving, the success of companies like Zonda highlights the potential for further growth in local vehicle assembly and the increasing appeal of Chinese brands across the country.
