Prez Mahama orders probe into election-related deaths
President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to commence immediate investigations into the deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. In a formal request signed by his secretary, Dr. Callistus Mahama, the President described the incidents as a significant blemish on Ghana’s democratic process and underscored the urgent need for justice for the victims and their families.
The request outlines specific steps to ensure thorough and transparent investigations. These include the formation of a dedicated investigative taskforce within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to focus solely on the cases. This approach, the President stated, would ensure undivided attention and efficient resolution.
The letter also called for collaboration with eyewitnesses, victims’ families, and other relevant individuals to gather critical information. Additionally, the President requested a review of electoral security arrangements to assess the roles and actions of security personnel deployed at the affected polling stations.
To strengthen the investigation, advanced forensic techniques were recommended to analyze physical evidence such as bullet casings and weaponry. Furthermore, the President urged the police to collaborate with the Electoral Commission and other civic organizations to review reports from the elections for additional insights.
To foster public confidence and ensure transparency, President Mahama requested periodic updates on the investigation’s progress. He expressed confidence in the professionalism and competence of the Ghana Police Service and assured his administration’s full support to facilitate the investigation.
The deaths, which occurred in different locations during the election periods, were reportedly linked to violent clashes, some allegedly involving security personnel. The incidents have drawn widespread criticism, with calls for accountability and measures to prevent a recurrence.
