Nigerian Poet Maryam Bukar Named UN Global Advocate for Peace

The United Nations has appointed celebrated Nigerian spoken word artist and poet Maryam Bukar as its Global Advocate for Peace, marking a milestone in efforts to amplify the role of art in peacebuilding.
Renowned for her powerful performances that champion gender equality, youth empowerment, and inclusive peace, Ms. Bukar has graced international stages such as the UN SDG Awards, TED Talks, and the World Bank Youth Summit. She previously partnered with the UN on initiatives like the viral “Peace Begins With Me” campaign and a moving spoken word presentation at the 2024 Summit of the Future.
Her work has earned her multiple accolades, including the Sustainable Africa Award at COP28 and finalist recognition at the 2024 UN SDG Creativity Awards.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, hailed her designation:
“Maryam Bukar’s dedication will raise awareness of UN peace and security priorities, especially the critical roles of women and youth in shaping inclusive, lasting peace.”
Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, also emphasized the transformative potential of art:
“Through her compelling words, Maryam has shown how creativity can inspire action, heal divisions, and bring communities together.”
In her new role, Ms. Bukar will serve as the first Global Advocate for the UN Peace and Security Pillar, using storytelling, digital engagement, and public speaking to promote the Women, Peace and Security and Youth, Peace and Security agendas.
Speaking after her designation, Bukar reaffirmed her mission:
“Peace begins in our stories, in our voices. I’m honoured to use poetry to help bridge divides and amplify hope.”
Her appointment highlights the UN’s recognition of the power of creative expression in advancing dialogue, inclusion, and sustainable peace worldwide.
