President John Dramani Mahama has swiftly appointed interim ministers to oversee the Defence and Environment portfolios following the tragic deaths of the incumbent ministers in a helicopter crash near Obuasi on August 6, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Thursday, August 7, the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, will now take on additional responsibilities as the Acting Minister for Defence.

In a related move, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, has been tasked to act as Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology until further notice.

The temporary appointments come in the wake of the loss of the substantive ministers, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah (Defence) and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (Environment), who, along with other government officials and military personnel, perished in a military helicopter crash while en route to an official event in Obuasi.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, signed the statement, affirming the government’s commitment to maintaining continuity in leadership during this difficult time.

Ghana continues to mourn the fallen public servants as the nation awaits further updates on investigations into the crash.
