UN Mourns Loss of Ghanaian Ministers in Helicopter Tragedy

The United Nations in Ghana has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in the Ghana Air Force helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of top government officials, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
In a statement issued on August 6, 2025, UN Resident Coordinator Zia Choudhury extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Government of Ghana, and the Ghanaian people.
“This tragedy is not only a national wound but also a loss felt across the international community,” the statement read.
Describing the incident as a moment of “deep grief,” the UN commended the legacy of the deceased and offered solidarity with the nation as it mourns.
“We honour the memory of those who have passed, with hope for their lasting peace,” it added.
The fatal crash involving a Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter has cast a shadow over the nation, sparking tributes from global and local leaders alike. Funeral arrangements and a state memorial are expected to be announced soon.
