President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that government has approved the declaration of commerciality (DoC) for the Eban-Akoma oil and gas discoveries, describing the move as a major step toward boosting production, job creation, and energy security.

Speaking at a media encounter in Accra, the President said the approval authorises Joint Venture partners — Eni Ghana Exploration & Production Ltd, Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd, Woodfields Upstream Ghana Ltd, and GNPC Exploration & Production Company Ltd (Explorco) — together with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), to prepare a full Plan of Development (PoD) for the fields.

“This milestone brings us closer to increased oil and gas production, job creation and enhanced energy security, reinforcing our commitment to responsible resource management for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” Mahama said.

He added that the development of the Eban-Akoma fields would complement ongoing energy initiatives, such as the construction of the second gas processing plant (GPP-2). The project is expected to double national processing capacity, cut dependence on costly imported fuels, and support cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable power generation.

The President also stressed the wider economic gains, including support for industrial growth, direct and indirect job creation, and stronger energy security for households and businesses. “This is part of our deliberate strategy to ensure that Ghana’s natural resources contribute meaningfully to national development and shared prosperity,” he noted.

According to Mahama, the DoC for Eban-Akoma reinforces Ghana’s status as a growing energy hub in West Africa and opens the door for greater local content participation, investment in oilfield services, and expansion of supporting infrastructure.
