KlA on Transformation Drive to Cement Its Place as West Africa’s Aviation Hub

Airports across the world are constantly evolving to meet rising passenger demand, enhance sustainability, and boost operational efficiency. Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is no exception.
Over the years, KIA has recorded steady growth in passenger traffic and aircraft movements and is currently served by 24 international airlines. To keep pace with this growth and enhance its standing as West Africa’s premier aviation hub, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is rolling out a series of strategic infrastructure projects aimed at improving passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Repurposing of Terminal 2
Terminal 2 is being redeveloped for dual use, handling both international and domestic passengers. The upgrade will ease congestion at Terminal 3 during peak hours while optimizing existing space. Plans include a facelift of the meeters-and-greeters area into a modern two-story facility, alongside new retail outlets and restaurants to improve services for travelers and visitors.
Construction of a Multi-Storey Car Park
To respond to rising traffic and support government’s 24-hour economy policy, a new multi-storey car park will be built on the current Terminal 3 car park site. Capacity will increase from 513 to 2,000 vehicles, with commercial, retail, and hotel facilities integrated into the development. An alternate car park will be provided during construction. Beyond easing traffic, this project will generate thousands of jobs in construction, operations, hospitality, and retail, directly feeding into the 24-hour economy agenda.
Connecting Concourse Between Terminals 2 and 3
A new connecting concourse will link Terminals 2 and 3, eliminating the current need for passengers to walk outdoors or use vehicles between the terminals. The concourse will feature global-standard passenger facilities, including commercial spaces, lounges, boarding bridges, lifts, escalators, and travellators, ensuring seamless movement and reduced transfer times.
Runway Overlay Project
Work has already begun on rehabilitating KIA’s main runway. The project will extend its lifespan and strengthen safety compliance. Improvements include widening the runway from 45 meters to 60 meters and installing advanced LED aeronautical ground lighting for better operational efficiency.
With these flagship projects, KIA is set for a remarkable transformation over the next two to five years. Once completed, passengers and visitors will experience not just iconic infrastructure, but also a more efficient, seamless, and enjoyable gateway to Ghana and the sub-region.
