More Ghanaians Struggling to Get Enough Food — Statistical Service Warns

This year’s World Food Day has brought a serious reminder that many families in Ghana are finding it harder to put food on the table. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) says the number of people who do not have enough to eat rose sharply in 2024.

According to their latest report, about 13.3 million Ghanaians are now food insecure, meaning they sometimes go hungry or cannot get the right kind of food to stay healthy. This is almost one million more people than at the start of the year, when the figure was 12.4 million.

In simple terms, the report shows that more families are skipping meals or relying on cheaper, less nutritious foods because they cannot afford or find enough of what they need.

This year’s World Food Day theme “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future” — reminds everyone that food is not a privilege but a basic human right. Everyone, whether in the city or the village, deserves to have access to safe, good-quality food every day.

Experts say that for Ghana to change this story, farmers need more support, food prices must be kept under control, and the country must work harder to make sure no one goes hungry.

For many ordinary Ghanaians, the message is simple — when food is scarce, life becomes difficult. Ensuring that every household can eat well is not just about ending hunger; it is about giving everyone a fair chance at a better life.
