The Government of Ghana has officially reverted the name of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, restoring the facility’s original and internationally recognised designation.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport, authorities said the decision reflects a move to align the airport’s identity with its historical naming, noting that the facility was originally known as Accra International Airport prior to its redesignation.

The Ministry emphasised that the change is administrative and symbolic, and will not affect airport operations, safety standards, airline schedules, or international travel arrangements. Within the records of the International Civil Aviation Organization, the airport’s code has consistently remained “ACC,” underscoring continuity in global aviation systems.

Implementation of the renaming will involve the phased updating of official documents, statutory instruments where required, airport signage, digital platforms, aviation publications, and related communication materials. Authorities said the transition will be carried out systematically to avoid disruption to passengers and industry stakeholders.

The Ministry called on the general public, aviation partners, and international stakeholders to cooperate with relevant agencies to ensure a smooth transition.

Accra International Airport serves as Ghana’s primary aviation gateway, handling the bulk of international passenger traffic and playing a central role in regional connectivity, trade facilitation, and tourism development. The renaming comes amid ongoing infrastructure upgrades and efforts to strengthen Ghana’s positioning as a competitive aviation hub in West Africa.
