TVET DG encourages women to take up technical trades

In a bid to provide avenues for women to excel, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service in Ghana is encouraging more women to venture into male-dominated fields.

Director General of TVET Services, Ms. Mawusi Nudekor Awity, emphasized that women have the potential to excel in areas such as building, construction, welding, tiling, and auto mechanics.

Speaking at a skills training session for women in Accra, Madam Awity highlighted the financial benefits of pursuing technical vocations, citing the example of masons who can earn up to GH₵200 per day, compared to dressmakers who may struggle to make GH₵100 daily.

“ I would encourage more young women to go into the male-dominated spaces such as building, construction, welding, tiling, auto mechanics because that is where the money is. When a mason goes to work by day, look at how much they charge today. The dressmaker cannot make 100 CDs a day.  But the mason can make GH₵200,  GH₵180 and things like that,” Madam Awity stated.

Ghana, she observed has more female-headed households. According to her ,women look after the family better than the men.  So we are encouraging more women to go into the male-dominated spaces.

The TVET Director General revealed that plans were afoot through a Japanese deal to train the youth, especially women in automechanics.

With a focus on empowering female-headed households, TVET Services aims to increase female participation in technical aspects of vocations, providing a pathway to financial independence and economic growth.
