Newmont’s Ahafo South mine tops GC100 Awards again

At the 21st Ghana Club 100 Awards held in Accra, Newmont’s Ahafo South Mine emerged as the top company in Ghana’s private sector for the second consecutive year. The awards, organized by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), rank the top 100 private companies across various industries, recognizing their contributions to Ghana’s economic development. This year’s theme, “Fostering Domestic Champions, Building Local Capacity,” highlighted the importance of local businesses in driving sustainable economic growth.

The Ahafo South Mine’s achievement underscores Newmont’s sustained commitment to excellence in the extractive industry, as it was also ranked as the leading company in the sector. Newmont’s Akyem Mine, another standout performer, secured fourth place overall and took the third spot in the extractive sector rankings, reflecting a steady improvement from its fifth-place position last year. This dual accomplishment by Newmont’s mines reaffirms its influence as a top player within Ghana’s mining industry and the broader private sector.

Managing Director of Newmont Ghana, Abdul Rahman Amoadu, expressed gratitude to the GIPC for the recognition, emphasizing that the real credit belonged to Newmont’s hardworking employees and supportive host communities. “Congratulations to our hardworking and diligent workforce, our host communities, and stakeholders in both Ahafo South and Akyem mines for maintaining this excellent performance,” Amoadu said during his acceptance speech.

Acknowledging the challenging business environment, Amoadu underscored Newmont’s resilience and commitment to supporting Ghana’s development goals. “Being first is nice, but being nominated as part of the top 100 companies is the ultimate prize. We are proud to have achieved this feat, and I assure you we will continue to do our best to support the country. Despite the challenges, we will remain resilient and forge ahead in unity,” he said.

The Ghana Club 100 Awards celebrate exceptional businesses that have demonstrated consistent growth, innovation, and contributions to the Ghanaian economy. Newmont’s high-ranking positions in these awards not only recognize its operational success but also highlight its dedication to sustainability and corporate responsibility. Over the years, Newmont has invested heavily in local development initiatives, including infrastructure, education, and community health projects in the Ahafo and Akyem regions. These efforts have solidified the company’s role in empowering its host communities and supporting regional economic growth.

Amoadu also took the opportunity to address the importance of a peaceful election season as Ghana approaches its 2024 general elections. “As elections approach, we urge all to pray for a peaceful process and remind ourselves that we’ve done it several times before,” he stated, underscoring the need for unity and stability to foster continued economic progress.

Looking ahead, Newmont’s leadership affirmed the company’s resolve to maintain its position as an industry leader and committed to continuously improving operations at its mines. “We pledge to keep excelling and look forward to clinching the topmost award again in the future,” Amoadu added.

The recognition of Newmont’s Ahafo South Mine as the top company in the Ghana Club 100 reinforces the critical role of the extractive sector in Ghana’s economic landscape. With Akyem Mine also performing strongly, Newmont’s dual success signals the company’s effective strategies in both operational efficiency and sustainable impact, positioning it as a model for corporate excellence in Ghana. As Ghana’s mining industry continues to grow, Newmont’s commitment to excellence and community development remains pivotal to the sector’s future.
