Prez Akufo-Addo launches 5G network to power Ghana’s digital transformation

In a significant leap toward digital innovation, President Nana Akufo-Addo has launched Ghana’s first 5G wholesale infrastructure, provided by Next Gen Infraco (NGIC) in partnership with technology giants Nokia, Radisys, and Tech Mahindra. This landmark launch establishes NGIC as the driving force behind Ghana’s 5G connectivity, supporting Ghana’s Digital Agenda 2030 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

With the theme “5G: Accelerating Ghana’s Digital Transformation,” the launch positions Ghana as a leading digital economy on the continent. Speaking at the event, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of 5G in transforming Ghana’s economy, unlocking opportunities for innovation, and enhancing connectivity for citizens nationwide. The president highlighted the pivotal role of infrastructure in advancing Ghana’s digital ecosystem, making technology more accessible to businesses and individuals alike.

Expanding Digital Access Nationwide

NGIC’s wholesale model will allow telecom operators to extend 5G services without the need to develop their own networks, making the expansion of high-speed internet more efficient and affordable. CEO Tenu Awoonor noted that NGIC’s mission is to ensure that Ghana’s digital landscape keeps pace with global standards, stating, “Our commitment is to make 5G accessible, resilient, and transformative for all Ghanaians, from urban hubs to rural communities.”

The phased rollout will begin with major cities such as Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, followed by other urban centers by the end of 2024. NGIC aims to cover rural areas and achieve nationwide coverage by 2026, marking a transformative leap toward digital inclusivity.

Strategic Global Partnerships to Boost Ghana’s 5G Future

NGIC’s partnerships with Nokia, Radisys, and Tech Mahindra are vital in creating a state-of-the-art 5G network that prioritizes speed, reliability, and security. Nokia’s Senior Vice President for MEA Mobile Networks, Mikko Lavanti, expressed optimism about the collaboration, saying, “With NGIC, we are shaping a 5G infrastructure that not only supports connectivity but fuels economic growth across Ghana.”

Radisys CEO Arun Bhikshesvaran added that the company’s open RAN and cloud-native technologies will enable NGIC to scale rapidly while maintaining cost-effectiveness, essential for a developing economy. “Our technology ensures NGIC’s network infrastructure can adapt swiftly to new services and future demands, allowing Ghana to stay at the cutting edge of 5G evolution,” he explained.

Tech Mahindra’s Rajiv Vyas, Head of Africa Network Services Sales, emphasized the role of 5G in transforming sectors such as education, logistics, and telemedicine. “With our AI-driven analytics and cybersecurity protocols, Ghana’s 5G ecosystem is set to drive sustainable growth and empower communities with smarter, connected solutions,” he remarked.

Ensuring Secure and Reliable Connectivity

Data security is integral to NGIC’s rollout strategy, with robust cybersecurity frameworks in place to protect users’ data and ensure a safe digital environment. Through advanced encryption and constant monitoring, NGIC is setting high standards for secure 5G adoption, providing citizens with confidence to engage in Ghana’s digital economy.

A Year of Economic Resilience: Cedi’s Journey and Stability Efforts

As Ghana moves forward with its digital transformation, the cedi has faced challenges, with a 24.3% year-to-date depreciation and a current rate near GHS 17 to the dollar. The Bank of Ghana is working actively to stabilize the currency, with Governor Dr. Ernest Addison underscoring the importance of building reserves to limit currency volatility. “We are focused on managing the exchange rate through strengthened reserves and strategic policies to support the cedi in the long term,” he assured.

A Vision for Ghana’s Digital Future

With NGIC’s 5G launch, Ghana stands at the cusp of a new era in connectivity, technology-driven growth, and digital inclusivity. President Akufo-Addo’s leadership and NGIC’s partnerships with leading technology providers demonstrate Ghana’s commitment to advancing its digital infrastructure, positioning the nation as a beacon of innovation and economic opportunity in Africa’s digital landscape.
