SONA: Prez Akufo-Addo touts mining sector achievements

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has lauded his administration’s progress in the mining, forestry, and land sectors, emphasizing transformative initiatives that have positioned Ghana as a leader in the African mining industry. Delivering the State of the Nation Address to Parliament, he highlighted landmark achievements, particularly in the gold mining sector.

According to the President, bold policies and reforms have propelled Ghana to surpass South Africa as the continent’s top gold producer. The country has consistently increased production, reaching a record-breaking 4 million ounces in the past year.

The government’s efforts have revitalized dormant mines, such as the Obuasi and Bibiani mines, which are now operational. Additionally, the establishment of the Cardinal Namdini Mine, Ghana’s first large-scale mining operation in the northern region and the first greenfield mine in over a decade, represents a significant milestone. Ongoing projects, including new mines in Ahafo by Newmont and Upper West by Azumah Resources, further underscore the sector’s growth.

To enhance value addition within the mining industry, a 400-kilogram capacity gold refinery has been constructed under a public-private partnership initiative. Furthermore, the President announced progress on a $450 million manganese refinery in Nsuta, which is expected to boost the country’s manganese processing capabilities.

Beyond gold and manganese, Ghana is laying the foundation for industrializing other natural resources through the establishment of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation and the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation. These entities aim to create jobs, generate significant revenue, and drive value addition to the country’s natural resources.

President Akufo-Addo underscored the broader vision guiding these initiatives: maximizing the benefits of Ghana’s resource wealth for its citizens while ensuring sustainable development for future generations.

These accomplishments, the President noted, reflect his government’s commitment to transforming the mining sector into a pillar of economic growth and national development.
