OSP Removes Ken Ofori-Atta from Wanted List

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially removed Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, a former Minister of Finance, from its list of wanted persons following his commitment to voluntarily return to Ghana. This development comes after Mr. Ofori-Atta, who was previously declared a fugitive from justice, provided a definite date for his return to the jurisdiction through his legal representatives.
The OSP had earlier declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a wanted person on the grounds that he had failed to provide a reasonable timeframe for his return despite being notified that he was a suspect in multiple corruption and corruption-related cases. He was directed to physically appear before the OSP in Accra on a specified date for questioning, which he did not meet, prompting the OSP’s action.
In a significant turn of events on February 18, 2025, Mr. Ofori-Atta, through his lawyers, informed the OSP of his voluntary return to Ghana on a specific date. The OSP deemed this timeframe reasonable and subsequently rescheduled his appearance before the office to align with his stated return.
“Consequently, Mr. Ofori-Atta has been removed from the OSP’s list of wanted persons and is no longer considered a fugitive from justice, pending his voluntary return to the jurisdiction and his stated appearance before the OSP,” the office announced in a statement.
The OSP, however, issued a caution that if Mr. Ofori-Atta fails to return as promised or fails to appear on the rescheduled date, he will be re-entered on the list of wanted persons, and the office will take all necessary legal steps to secure his return.
The OSP reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability while adhering to due process and fairness.
