Western North, a Food Basket, Tops Food Inflation with 21.7%

In a striking twist, Ghana’s Western North Region one of the country’s leading food baskets has recorded the highest food inflation rate at 21.7% in August 2025, according to data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The irony is hard to miss: a region that supplies much of the nation’s food is grappling with some of the steepest price increases, highlighting deep inefficiencies in local supply chains, storage, and distribution.

The data shows that Upper West (21.8%) and Oti (20.5%) followed closely behind Western North, making them the top three regions with the highest overall inflation rates. On the other end of the scale, Bono East (6.1%), Eastern (7.4%), and Greater Accra (7.9%) recorded the lowest rates, underscoring sharp regional disparities in price pressures.

Nationally, inflation slowed to 11.5% in August, the lowest in almost four years, but the wide regional gaps suggest uneven relief for households. While food inflation nationally eased to 14.8%, Western North’s figure shows that families in key producing regions are still paying more despite being close to food sources.
