Western Serene Atlantic Hotel, a member of the First Sky Group, has announced the appointment of Mercy Abena Twumwaa Asubonteng as its new General Manager, effective September 1, 2025.

The Takoradi-based hotel, originally built in 1962 by Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has long been a landmark of heritage and hospitality. Following its full acquisition by the First Sky Group in June 2024, the hotel has undergone significant transformation to maintain its luxury standards and position itself competitively in Ghana’s hospitality space.

Ms. Asubonteng brings over 20 years of industry experience, having held senior roles such as Food & Beverage Manager, Conference & Banqueting Executive, and Marketing Manager in leading hospitality facilities. She previously served as Acting General Manager of the hotel, where she provided strategic direction and strengthened key business relationships.

Mrs. Rhoda Ashiabi, Chief Executive Officer of Serene Hotels & Resorts, which includes Volta Serene Hotel, Oti Serene Resorts, and Western Serene Atlantic Hotel, praised the appointment. “Abena’s passion for excellence, visionary aptitude, and robust leadership are exactly what we need to achieve our tactical goal of positioning the hotel among the top-tier 5-star establishments in Ghana and West Africa within the next three years,” she said.

Executive Chairman of First Sky Group, Mr. Eric Seddy Kutortse, added that her elevation reflected the Group’s commitment to empowering women in leadership. “Her appointment reflects the Group’s firm belief in women’s exceptional leadership skills, expertise, and their pivotal role in driving success within a globally competitive hospitality market,” he noted.

Accepting the role, Ms. Asubonteng expressed her readiness to build on the hotel’s legacy. “I look forward to leading my team and driving innovation, growth, and excellence at Western Serene Atlantic Hotel as the preferred brand of choice in the hospitality industry in Ghana,” she said.

The appointment comes at a time when Ghana’s hospitality sector is becoming increasingly central to tourism development. The hotel’s link to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of showcasing Ghana to the world, combined with its modern repositioning under First Sky Group, highlights its potential role in boosting both business and leisure travel to the Western Region.
