DSTv Faces Possible Shutdown Today over Prolonged Price Standoff

Ghanaians could lose access to DSTv services today, September 6, 2025, as Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations Minister, Samuel Nartey George, has vowed to shut down MultiChoice operations in the country.

The escalation follows a Friday night statement from the South African pay-TV operator firmly rejecting claims that it had consented to cut subscription fees, contradicting what the Minister had earlier communicated to the public.

Mr. George had previously told journalists that, after extensive discussions, MultiChoice had accepted to reduce prices and was given a 14-day deadline to implement the changes. With the company now insisting otherwise, the Minister says government is left with no option but to act.

“I will not continue to allow DSTv to show disregard for Ghanaians. If MultiChoice has withdrawn from the commitment they made to me, we will proceed with the shutdown today as stated,” he stressed.

The Minister directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to enforce the order, emphasizing that “no corporate entity is above Ghana’s laws.”

He noted that Ghana remains open for businesses that play by the rules, making clear that dialogue can resume only when MultiChoice is ready to revisit the issue of pricing.

The dispute has reignited frustrations over subscription costs, with consumers closely watching how the showdown will affect access to one of the country’s most popular entertainment platforms.
