Ghana inflation rises to 5% in August

Ghana’s annual inflation rate rose to 5% in August 2026, from 4.6% in July, marking the fourth increase in the past 19 months, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) said on Wednesday.
The increase comes after a prolonged decline in inflation from December 2024, when the rate stood at 23.8%.
Government Statistician Alhassan Iddrisu said the August increase was driven largely by higher prices for housing, water and energy, which contributed 29.4% to overall inflation.
Food also remained a major contributor, accounting for 29.1% of headline inflation during the month.
Despite the monthly increase, Mr Iddrisu said inflation had been cut by more than half over the past year, falling from above 11.5% in August 2025 to 5% in August 2026.
Food inflation eased slightly to 3% in August, from 3.1% in July. Non-food inflation, however, rose to 6.8%, from 6.1%.
Inflation for locally produced items increased to 6.1%, from 5.9%, while inflation for imported items rose to 2.2%, from 2%.
The latest figures show that while overall inflation remains significantly below last year’s level, price pressures in the non-food sector are picking up.
