Serene Insurance Expands Customer Base and Agency Network as Business Grows

Serene Insurance Ltd’s recent run of industry awards is putting renewed attention on the role of professional expertise, underwriting discipline and claims management as the indigenous insurer expands its presence in Ghana’s general insurance market.

The company secured two corporate awards at the 9th Ghana Insurance Awards on August 22, 2026, where it was named Indigenous Insurance Company of the Year 2025 and Promising Insurance Company of the Year 2025.

A week later, the company’s Head of Underwriting, Mrs Barbara Odoi, was named Professional Underwriter of the Year 2025 at the 6th Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG) Excellence Awards.

The latest recognitions build on two individual awards received by Serene Insurance professionals at the previous CIIG Excellence Awards. Its Head of Claims, Mr Daniel Otoo, was named Claims Professional of the Year 2024, while Chief Executive Officer Mrs Mercy Naa Koshie Boampong received the Insurance Professional of the Year 2024 award.

The concentration of awards around underwriting, claims and professional leadership gives the company’s recent recognition a broader industry dimension, particularly as insurers face the need to balance market expansion with effective risk management and customer service.

Underwriting recognition

Mrs Odoi’s award places underwriting at the centre of Serene Insurance’s latest industry recognition.

Underwriting is fundamental to an insurer’s ability to assess risk, determine appropriate premiums and manage the potential cost of claims. Weak risk assessment can undermine profitability even where an insurer is growing its customer base and premium income.

Mrs Boampong said the recognition reflected the company’s approach to risk management and described underwriting as a foundation for financial stability and customer confidence.

For Serene Insurance, the award therefore provides an opportunity to demonstrate that its expansion is being accompanied by investment in the professional capabilities required to manage a growing insurance portfolio.

Mrs Odoi attributed the recognition to teamwork and professional development, saying it reinforced her commitment to maintaining high standards in underwriting.

Awards extend beyond the boardroom

The recognition of professionals in both underwriting and claims also points to the importance of functions that customers encounter directly when they purchase and use insurance products.

Claims settlement is particularly significant to customer confidence because it determines how effectively an insurer responds when policyholders suffer covered losses.

The earlier recognition of Mr Otoo as Claims Professional of the Year 2024 gives Serene Insurance another industry award linked to the operational side of its business.

The company says its growth has been accompanied by an efficient claims process and continued attention to customer service.

Growth provides context

The awards come as Serene Insurance reports an expanding operational footprint.

The company says it currently has more than 60,000 institutional and retail customers, supported by more than 280 agents and over 97 employees across Ghana.

It also reports growth in gross written premiums, underwriting profit and branch operations.

While the awards recognise professional and organisational achievements, these operating indicators provide a different measure of how the insurer is developing its position in the market.

For an indigenous insurer, the challenge is not only to expand distribution but to maintain the quality of risk assessment and claims administration as the customer and policy portfolio grows.

Indigenous insurance sector

The Indigenous Insurance Company of the Year award also places Serene Insurance within the broader development of locally owned insurance businesses in Ghana.

As indigenous insurers expand their customer bases and distribution networks, professional expertise becomes increasingly important to their ability to compete and manage risks.

The recent awards recognise Serene Insurance at both the corporate and individual levels, covering its market position as well as expertise in underwriting, claims and leadership.

Mrs Boampong said the company’s achievements reflected the contribution of its board, management and staff.

For Serene Insurance, the significance of the latest awards will ultimately be measured not only by the number of industry honours it receives, but by its ability to translate professional capacity and market expansion into sustained underwriting performance, efficient claims settlement and customer confidence.
