The Ghana Police Service has taken swift action following a viral video showing a police officer assaulting a journalist covering the ongoing election activities in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

In an official statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate, the police confirmed the incident and stated that the officer involved has been withdrawn from election duties and interdicted in line with internal disciplinary protocols.

“The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North; and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation,” the statement signed by ASP R. Mensah read.

The disturbing footage, which has sparked public outrage on social media, shows the uniformed officer physically confronting the reporter in the line of duty. The identity of the journalist and the media house involved have not yet been disclosed.

The Police Administration assured the public of a thorough investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and accountability.

“We would like to assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter and further updates will be communicated,” the statement added.

The assault comes at a time when media freedom and the safety of journalists are under intense scrutiny, especially during election-related coverage. Several civil society groups and media watchdogs have already condemned the incident and are calling for transparency and swift justice.

This incident adds to growing concerns about the conduct of security personnel during electoral exercises, and the Police Service’s response will be closely monitored as a litmus test of its internal accountability mechanisms.
