Two people are feared dead and several others are believed to be trapped after a three-storey building collapsed on Sunday at North Kaneshie in Accra, triggering a major rescue operation by emergency services.

Rescue teams from the Ghana National Fire Service, supported by other security agencies, are working around the clock to search through the debris for survivors. Authorities say a number of occupants may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who visited the scene, said rescue efforts remain ongoing as emergency responders continue to assess the extent of the disaster.

Eyewitnesses reported that the building, which accommodated both residential and commercial occupants, suddenly gave way in the busy neighbourhood, sending residents and bystanders into panic.

Fire Service personnel said access to some sections of the collapsed structure remains difficult, prompting the deployment of heavy-duty equipment to assist with the operation and improve the chances of reaching those still trapped.

Emergency officials have cordoned off the area and appealed to members of the public to stay away from the scene to allow rescue teams to work without obstruction.

The cause of the collapse has not yet been established, and authorities are expected to launch investigations once rescue operations are completed.

The incident adds to growing concerns over building safety and compliance with construction standards in parts of the capital, where structural failures have periodically raised questions about enforcement and oversight.
