Prez Akufo-Addo assents to Affirmative Action Gender Equity Act

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assented to the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 2024.

This formalises Ghana’s resolve to promote a more inclusive and equitable society for the citizenry.

A Facebook post by the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dakoa Newman, confirming the President’s assent to the Act, welcomed the move as it represented a major landmark in the nation’s efforts towards gender equity and women’s empowerment.

The Ministry, in an earlier statement, extended its sincere gratitude to the President, Parliament and all organisations, notably the Affirmative Action Coalition, as well as all individuals who championed that noble cause.

“We are committed to the effective implementation of this law to foster an equitable society for all Ghanaians,” the statement emphasised.

The purpose of the Act is to effectively redress social, cultural, economic and gender imbalance in the country, based on enduring gender bias rooted in entrenched patriarchical norms, despite formal legal equality between men and women.

It provides for progressive increase of women who, hitherto, were marginalised, to be well represented in decision-making processes and leadership positions for a more sustainable development.
