DHL Launches SME Exporter Awards to Boost Africa’s Trade Growth

DHL has launched the inaugural Exporters of the Year Awards across Sub-Saharan Africa to recognize the contribution of small and medium-sized enterprises to regional trade and economic development.
The initiative, part of DHL’s GoTrade program, is designed to spotlight SMEs as engines of job creation, innovation and cross-border trade. The awards will highlight businesses that demonstrate resilience and best practices in international markets, while addressing common barriers such as access to finance, logistics and digital tools.
“SMEs are the backbone of societies and the driving force behind sustainable economic growth. These awards provide a platform to celebrate their achievements and advocate for their participation in the global marketplace,” said Hennie Heymans, Chief Executive Officer of DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa.
The awards feature three categories: ESG Excellence Exporter, recognizing companies with strong environmental and social responsibility practices; Women Exporter of the Year, celebrating female-led businesses achieving success in international trade; and Global Expansion Exporter, honoring firms that have scaled significantly through cross-border growth.
Winners in each category will receive 4,000 euros and will be recognized at a ceremony at DHL’s Innovation Centre in Dubai. They will also gain opportunities to network and exchange ideas with DHL experts and international partners.
The contest is open to registered SMEs across Sub-Saharan Africa with no more than 25 employees, at least 12 months of cross-border trading experience and demonstrated compliance with international trade regulations.
Entries close on October 30. DHL said the awards are intended to reinforce its commitment to connecting people, improving lives and driving sustainable trade across Africa.
