Ecobank Ghana has completed its three-year commitment to support digital learning at the University of Ghana, handing over the final batch of laptops under the institution’s “One Student, One Laptop” initiative.

The latest consignment of 100 laptops brings the total number supplied to 300 since 2023, marking the full execution of a pledge designed to strengthen digital learning and prepare students for an increasingly technology-driven world.

Delivering on a three-year commitment

Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, Abena Osei-Poku, said the milestone reflects the bank’s commitment to education, youth development and digital inclusion.

“In 2023, we made a commitment to deliver 300 laptops over three years. Today, we are proud to have fully honoured that pledge,” she said.

The initiative began with the first batch of 100 laptops in April 2023, followed by another 100 units in 2024, culminating in the final delivery this year.

She emphasised that access to digital tools is no longer optional, but essential for students seeking to thrive academically and professionally.

“As a technology-driven pan-African bank, we believe digital access is critical for innovation, learning and preparing students for the world of work,” she noted.

Expanding opportunities through digital access

Ecobank said feedback from earlier distributions indicates that the laptops have already made a significant impact, particularly for students who previously struggled to access such resources.

The bank expects the final batch to further extend this benefit, enabling more students to pursue their studies with confidence and improve their digital competencies.

Beyond the laptop initiative, Ecobank highlighted its broader partnership with the university, including the deployment of digital payment and productivity solutions that support students, faculty and the wider university community.

A response to lessons from COVID-19

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, said the initiative was inspired in part by challenges experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many students lacked access to personal devices for remote learning.

“That period exposed a critical gap. Many students simply did not have the tools needed to fully participate in academic work,” she said.

She stressed that in today’s environment, digital literacy is a non-negotiable requirement for graduates, regardless of their field of study.

“No matter what students come here to study, they must leave as digitally savvy graduates,” she added.

Strengthening partnerships for student outcomes

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the collaboration with Ecobank has contributed directly to the university’s strategic priorities, particularly in enhancing student experience and deepening institutional partnerships.

She also pointed to ongoing efforts to upgrade computer laboratories and expand access to digital infrastructure, especially as the university increases the use of computer-based assessments.

Looking ahead, she called for stronger collaboration between academia and industry, particularly in areas such as internships and practical training.

“We cannot fully prepare students for the job market alone. Industry partnerships are essential to bridging the gap between theory and practice,” she said.

Beyond corporate giving

For Ecobank, the initiative forms part of a broader corporate purpose that extends beyond financial performance.

The bank reiterated its focus on creating long-term value through investments in education, digital inclusion and skills development areas seen as critical to national and continental growth.

For beneficiaries, the laptops represent more than just devices they are tools for learning, innovation and opportunity.

As Ghana continues to prioritise digital transformation and skills development, initiatives such as this underscore the growing role of private sector partnerships in shaping the future workforce.
