UBA Ghana Appoints Akeju Ahmed Gbenga as Country Chief Inspector
UBA Ghana has announced the appointment of Akeju Ahmed Gbenga as its Country Chief Inspector, reinforcing the Bank’s continued focus on strong corporate governance, risk management, regulatory compliance, and effective internal controls.
Gbenga brings more than 20 years of professional experience in internal audit, accounting, banking operations, risk assessment, and compliance to the role. He has built a significant part of his career within the UBA Group, giving him extensive institutional and cross-market experience.
Prior to his appointment, Gbenga served as Team Lead, Head Office Audit at UBA Plc, in Nigeria, where he was responsible for reviews covering several critical areas of the Bank, including Group Treasury, Trade and Treasury Operations, Financial Control, Compliance, Credit Risk, Corporate Governance, Market and Operational Risk and Internal Control over Financial Reporting.
He previously served as Team Lead, Audit, UBA Rest of Africa, from January 2011 to July 2021. In that role, he participated in the audit of UBA subsidiaries across 19 African countries, including Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, among others.
His extensive cross-border experience has included the assessment of internal controls, process audits, credit reviews, corporate governance reviews, regulatory compliance, treasury operations, risk assessments and engagements with regulators and external auditors across UBA’s African subsidiaries.
Commenting on the appointment, Bernard Gyebi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Ghana, said Gbenga’s experience would further strengthen the Bank’s governance and control environment.
“Gbenga brings to UBA Ghana a wealth of experience built over two decades across audit, operations, risk, governance, and regulatory compliance. Importantly, his extensive experience across UBA’s African operations gives him a strong understanding of our business, our control environment, and the markets in which we operate.”
Mr. Gyebi added: “Strong governance and effective internal controls are fundamental to building a sustainable financial institution. We are confident that Gbenga’s leadership will further strengthen our internal audit function, support disciplined risk management and contribute to the continued growth and resilience of UBA Ghana.”
Before moving fully into audit, Gbenga also gained considerable operational banking experience. He served as Head of Operations, Financial Institution Unit, UBA Plc, from 2008 to 2010, having earlier worked in Branch Operations from 2004.
Gbenga is a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (FCIB). He is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria and an Associate Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management.
He holds a Master of Business Administration from Lagos State University and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Ogun State University, now Olabisi Onabanjo University.
The appointment forms part of UBA Ghana’s commitment to maintaining high standards of corporate governance, regulatory compliance, risk management, and operational excellence as the Bank continues to grow its business and serve customers across Ghana.
