Climate action: Prez pushes for women, children empowerment

PRESIDENT Nana Akufo Addo has proposed that Africa  prioritises education and awareness in amplifying the voices of women and children on Climate action.

He said that educated women and children will be better equipped to understand climate change impacts and adopt sustainable behaviours.

The President pointed out  that investing in education and awareness campaigns, women and children will be more informed and engaged in fostering collective actions towards climate goals.

The President said this at the maiden Africa Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC) in Accra which sought to discuss the impact of climate change on women and children in Africa.

He stated that environmental stewardship is another action that can be prioritised in amplifying the voices of women and children in Climate Action.

He noted that women as primary care givers and managers of household resources are crucial in driving sustainable practices within their families and communities.

“When empowered, they can champion eco-friendly behaviours, promoting sustainable consumption, waste reduction of recycling and the protection of natural resources” he explained.

The President highlighted that prioritising economic empowerment can also help in amplifying the voices of women and children in Climate Action.

He stressed that empowering women economically will enable them to participate in Climate resilient livelihoods and sustainable business ventures.

He added the active engagement in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy and green enterprise contributes to low carbon and climate resilient development.

Akufo Addo indicated that gender responsive policies will also help in amplifying the voices of women and children in Climate Action.

He said that policies that prioritise gender equality and women empowerment lead to better climate outcomes.

He suggested that women and children should be given the opportunity to participate actively in decision making process at all levels.

“Women and children possess traditional knowledge and innovative perspectives on climate adaptation and resilience and their active involvement ensures that climate solutions are contextually relevant and inclusive addressing the diverse needs of Communities” he stressed.

He stated community building as another action that could be taken in amplifying the voices of women and children in Climate Action.

The President mentioned that empowering women and children fosters community cohesion and collective action.

“By elevating their voices, we create a sense of ownership and responsibility for climate change solutions, strengthening social resilience in the face of global challenges” he added.

He concluded that women and children possess valuable traditional knowledge and Innovative perspectives on climate adaptation and resilience.

The President said that their active involvement ensures that climate solutions are contextually relevant and inclusive in addressing the diverse needs of communities across Africa.

“By amplifying their voices and ensuring the active participation of women and children, we unlock the potential of a diverse and inclusive climate movement and protect the future of our planet” he said.
