Govt, GPRTU launch GoRide, to boost local drivers’ ncome
The Ghanaian government, in partnership with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has launched GoRide, a new ride-hailing app designed to enhance the earnings of local drivers and support the domestic economy. GoRide aims to compete with global platforms like Bolt, Uber, and Yango by offering GPRTU drivers a more favorable platform, focused on keeping profits within Ghana and promoting financial stability among local drivers.
Developed through strategic collaborations, GoRide charges a 10% commission on driver earnings—substantially lower than the 15-25% commission rates typically charged by foreign competitors. This reduction enables drivers to retain more of their income, providing a financial boost to local families and supporting Ghana’s goal of economic empowerment for its citizens.
The GoRide app is a dual benefit to the country: along with supporting drivers financially, it also retains profits within Ghana, conserving foreign exchange and fostering local wealth creation. In a market largely influenced by foreign-based apps, GoRide represents an economically resilient model aligned with Ghana’s vision of a self-sustained digital economy that provides livelihood support to local citizens.
A significant component of GoRide is its focus on job creation. The ride-hailing industry has seen rapid growth in Ghana over the past five years, spurring demand for driver services. With a platform tailored to drivers’ needs, GoRide not only increases drivers’ earning potential but also contributes to the overall employment landscape by creating more job opportunities for Ghanaians.
The Vice President emphasized the role of GoRide in Ghana’s broader digital transformation efforts, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring that new technological innovations translate to real economic benefits for local communities.
Alhaji Abass Imoro, the GPRTU’s Public Relations Officer, noted that the union expects GoRide to become a primary choice for passengers looking for efficient and affordable transportation options that also support Ghanaian drivers. Through this initiative, Ghana seeks to establish a national standard in the ride-hailing sector, blending technology with economic priorities to reinforce the local workforce and the economy, one ride at a time.
