GSA unveils vision to transform Ghana into a logistics hub
The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) is embarking on a bold initiative to position Ghana as a logistics hub in West Africa, aimed at expanding the nation’s share in global shipping and logistics markets.
The vision was outlined by the Chief Executive Officer of GSA, Mr. Kwesi Baffour Sarpong, during the Authority’s 50th-anniversary celebration held in Accra under the theme, “50 Years of Excellence in Shipping and Logistics: Dedication, Innovation, and Service in the Shipping Industry.”
A Comprehensive Shipping and Logistics Strategy
Mr. Sarpong emphasized the GSA’s commitment to developing a robust strategy to enhance value for shippers and logistics service providers. The Authority plans to implement tailored solutions for stakeholders, pre-emptively address complaints, and improve operational efficiency across all ports and borders.
Enhancing Trade and Streamlining Cargo Clearance
To boost Ghana’s competitiveness, the GSA is focused on streamlining cargo clearance processes, reducing non-tariff barriers, and forming strategic partnerships to support the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). By closely monitoring global trade trends, the Authority aims to remain adaptable to market demands and foster economic growth.
Infrastructure Modernization
Modernizing infrastructure is at the heart of GSA’s plan to meet future logistical demands. Key initiatives include:
- Operationalizing the Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal.
- Advocating for investments in advanced port facilities.
- Improving inland container depots and rail connectivity to ensure efficient intermodal transport.
The GSA is incorporating advanced technologies to enhance its operations:
- Data Analytics and AI: For demand forecasting and performance analysis.
- Smart Port Technology: To streamline cargo handling and reduce clearance times.

Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah praised the GSA’s contributions over the past five decades and encouraged the Authority to build on its legacy. He urged industry stakeholders to prioritize sustainable growth, embrace green shipping practices, and strengthen international collaborations to ensure Ghana remains a competitive player in global shipping.
“The next 50 years present an opportunity to transform the Authority into a world-class organization that anticipates future challenges while meeting today’s needs,” the minister remarked.
