Over 5,000 candidates face sanctions in 2024 WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has disclosed that over 5,000 candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) are facing sanctions for various forms of malpractice. The revelation accompanied the release of the examination results on Monday, December 30, 2024.

Breakdown of Sanctions

WAEC reported that the results of 4,108 candidates were canceled for using unauthorized materials during the exams, while 483 candidates had their entire results annulled for carrying mobile phones into the examination hall. Furthermore, the results of 781 candidates were withheld, pending investigations into suspected irregularities.

The council noted that the measures are part of efforts to uphold the integrity of the WASSCE and deter future misconduct.

Warnings to Stakeholders

In addition to the sanctions, WAEC cautioned candidates and stakeholders against fraudsters who claim to offer result upgrades for a fee. The council stressed that such offers are fraudulent and should be reported immediately.

Key Statistics from the 2024 WASSCE

This year’s examination recorded a total of 460,611 candidates from 1,003 schools, representing a 2.66% increase over the 2023 figure of 448,674. Of these, 4,609 candidates (1.0%) were absent.

WAEC’s Commitment to Fairness

WAEC reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent examination process. While acknowledging the efforts of the majority of candidates who adhered to the rules, the council underscored the need for vigilance and ethical conduct in future exams.

Candidates were advised to access their results online via www.waecgh.com and await updates on investigations regarding withheld results.
