Emirates has strengthened its commitment to inclusive travel by rolling out its specialised Travel Rehearsal programme across more than 40 cities worldwide, helping over 250 families navigate the challenges of air travel for individuals with autism.

The initiative, which began as a pilot in Dubai, has now evolved into a structured global programme designed to reduce travel anxiety among children and young adults on the autism spectrum. By simulating the airport journey, from check-in to boarding, the rehearsals provide participants with a controlled, supportive environment to familiarise themselves with the travel process.

Cities including Accra, London, Dubai, Paris, and Toronto have hosted these sessions, reflecting Emirates’ growing international reach in accessibility and inclusion. The airline has also trained more than 35,000 staff to better support neurodiverse passengers, ensuring that assistance extends beyond rehearsals to real travel experiences.

Industry data underscores the need for such interventions, with surveys indicating that a significant majority of families with autistic members are hesitant to travel due to the sensory challenges associated with airports and flights.

Participants and caregivers have widely praised the programme. Parents report increased confidence in planning trips, while educators and therapists highlight the value of experiential learning in helping children understand and manage unfamiliar environments.

An autism centre founder in Accra described the initiative as “a road to freedom,” noting that it provides families with reassurance and practical support often lacking in traditional travel settings.

Beyond rehearsals, Emirates continues to enhance onboard support through sensory products and dedicated resources available across all cabin classes. Its Accessible & Inclusive Travel Hub also provides tailored guidance for passengers with varying needs, from pre-flight preparation to arrival.

With plans to expand the programme further in 2026, Emirates is positioning itself at the forefront of inclusive aviation, demonstrating how targeted interventions can open global travel to communities often excluded by conventional systems.
