Ghana Extends Airport Operating Hours to Boost Domestic Connectivity and Support 24-Hour Economy Agenda

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) have announced the extension of operational hours at Prempeh I International Airport (PIA) in Kumasi and Tamale International Airport (TIA), a move expected to significantly improve regional air travel connectivity and drive local economic growth.

Under the new schedule, PIA will now operate until 11:00 PM and TIA until 10:00 PM daily. The extended hours will enable passengers arriving from international destinations—particularly from the UK, Europe, and beyond—to connect to Kumasi and Tamale without overnight layovers in Accra. Airlines are expected to respond by increasing evening flight frequencies to these cities.

The decision forms part of the government’s broader “reset agenda” aimed at revitalising the economy through the 24-hour economy policy, with regional airport expansion serving as a strategic pillar.

Airport concessionaires, including car rental operators and food and beverage vendors, have lauded the move, anticipating increased patronage and revenue from the extended activity window.

“This initiative aligns with our goal to enhance accessibility while stimulating economic activity in Kumasi and Tamale,” a GACL official said. “We believe it will drive both business and leisure traffic.”

To facilitate the changes, a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued, and domestic airlines have been encouraged to scale up evening operations to match the increased access.

Analysts say the decision underscores growing confidence in Ghana’s aviation sector and could further position regional airports as key enablers of decentralized economic development.
