Prez Akufo-Addo commissions iconic Bank Square
Accra reached a historic milestone as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially inaugurated The Bank Square, the state-of-the-art headquarters of the Bank of Ghana. The imposing architectural masterpiece, located in the heart of the capital, reflects Ghana’s economic strength and commitment to financial innovation.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo hailed the new headquarters as a symbol of the Bank’s pivotal role in the nation’s development. Established in 1957, the Bank of Ghana has been instrumental in maintaining monetary stability and economic resilience.
“The Bank Square is a declaration of intent,” the President stated. “It embodies the resilience of our institutions and the aspirations of our people.” He emphasized that the structure represents more than an office space—it is a hub for policy innovation, financial collaboration, and sustainable practices.
Crafted by Ghanaian firm GoldKey Properties under the leadership of architect Kwaku Bediako, the eco-friendly facility boasts cutting-edge technologies and environmentally conscious features. The new headquarters replaces the Bank’s outdated structure and aligns with Ghana’s ambition to position itself as a regional financial leader.
A Vision of Progress
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the headquarters as a step toward strengthening Ghana’s financial sector. With facilities that meet international standards, the complex enhances the Bank’s ability to implement reforms, attract investments, and build a robust regulatory framework.
The President commended Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, Deputy Governors Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Awadzi, and the Bank of Ghana staff for their dedication. He also praised the architects, engineers, and contractors for delivering a project that embodies national pride.
“This structure, built by Ghanaians for Ghanaians, stands as a landmark of pride,” the President remarked. He encouraged stakeholders to draw inspiration from The Bank Square in their pursuit of a stable and inclusive economy.
A Green and Functional Marvel
Governor Dr. Ernest Addison revealed that the facility is entirely powered by solar energy, setting a benchmark for environmentally friendly public buildings in Africa. The complex comprises four interconnected buildings that can accommodate over 2,500 staff. It features offices, public banking facilities, a currency museum, conference and press amenities, a 1,500-seat auditorium, and rooftop terraces.
Dr. Addison emphasized that the project prioritized value for money, with a cost per square meter lower than comparable projects in Accra. Moreover, the initiative offered invaluable opportunities for hundreds of local workers to enhance their skills, positioning them at the forefront of modern construction in Africa.
“This facility will foster creativity, collaboration, and efficiency, driving productivity and innovation in modern central banking,” Dr. Addison noted.
