Newmont Rolls Out Global-First Mining Technology at Ghana’s Ahafo South

Newmont has stepped up its technology investment in Ghana’s mining sector with the commissioning of the Cat® 6040 Next Generation Hydraulic Mining Shovel at its Ahafo South mine, making the operation the first within Newmont’s global portfolio and one of only three mine sites worldwide to deploy the advanced equipment.
The investment represents more than the arrival of new machinery. It reflects the mining industry’s growing reliance on advanced equipment to boost productivity, improve fuel efficiency, strengthen safety standards and reduce operating costs as companies seek to maximise output from existing assets.
Supplied by Mantrac Ghana, the Cat® 6040 Next Generation Hydraulic Mining Shovel will serve as the mine’s primary loading equipment. It features a larger bucket capacity, greater breakout force, upgraded twin Cat® C32B engines, improved fuel efficiency and a reinforced undercarriage designed to extend service life while lowering maintenance requirements.
Technology Becomes a Competitive Advantage
Mining companies worldwide are increasingly investing in next-generation equipment as pressure mounts to improve operational efficiency while meeting higher environmental, safety and production standards.
Loading equipment sits at the centre of mining operations, determining how quickly ore moves from the pit to processing plants. Even modest improvements in loading performance can significantly reduce production costs and improve overall mine productivity.
Alex Kofi Annin, General Manager of Newmont Ahafo South, described the commissioning as an important milestone for the operation.
“The commissioning of the Cat® 6040 Next Generation shovel marks an important milestone for Ahafo South and reflects Newmont’s commitment to investing in innovative technologies that enhance safety, reliability and operational performance. As the first unit of its kind within Newmont, this investment strengthens our ability to deliver long-term value while supporting the continued growth and success of our operation.”
Safety Designed into the Equipment
Alongside productivity improvements, the hydraulic shovel has been engineered with a strong focus on operator safety.
It complies with Newmont’s Heavy Mobile Equipment Safety Systems Standard and incorporates dual fire suppression systems, enhanced operator visibility, camera monitoring technology, emergency escape systems, protected access platforms and multiple emergency shutdown controls.
The investment reflects a broader industry trend towards deploying technology that not only improves operational performance but also reduces workplace risks.
Long-Term Investment in Ghana
The commissioning also signals Newmont’s continued investment in Ghana’s mining industry, where the company remains one of the country’s largest gold producers.
By introducing advanced equipment, Newmont aims to modernise its operations, sustain long-term production, improve operational resilience and create lasting value for shareholders, employees, contractors and host communities.
As mining becomes increasingly technology-driven, investments in advanced equipment are emerging as a key source of competitive advantage, with operational innovation becoming as important as the quality of the mineral resource itself.
