Veep launches electric buses to revolutionize Ghana’s public transport system

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has inaugurated the first batch of 100 electric buses (EVs) for Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) as part of efforts to modernize Ghana’s transportation system. The initiative aims to reduce public transport costs, enhance accessibility, and align with global efforts to cut carbon emissions.

The rollout represents a pilot phase in the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government’s broader agenda to integrate green technology into public transport, making it more efficient and environmentally friendly. The initiative is also expected to cut MMT’s operational and maintenance costs by half while reducing public transport fares by up to 50%.

At a ceremony in Adentan, Accra, Dr. Bawumia underscored the transformative potential of EVs, describing the move as a significant step toward modernizing Ghana’s transport sector. He emphasized the government’s vision to expand the use of electric vehicles beyond MMT, benefiting the entire public transport sector.

As part of the broader strategy, credit facilities will be made available for members of the Ghana Public Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport associations to acquire electric buses. The Vice President encouraged transport operators to join organized unions to benefit from this initiative.

The government’s plan includes collaboration with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to train technical staff for the maintenance of EVs. Charging infrastructure has already been installed along pilot routes, including Adentan-Accra and Ashaiman-Accra, to support the smooth operation of the buses.

Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiama highlighted that the pilot program is designed to identify operational challenges and refine the initiative before scaling it nationwide. He reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming the entire public transport sector.

Albert Adu Boahen, Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Ltd., expressed gratitude for the government’s support and outlined the anticipated benefits, including a 55% reduction in fuel costs and improved passenger experiences. He also acknowledged the launch of the Electric Policy Framework in 2023, which provides guidelines for implementing EVs in Ghana.

This initiative marks a milestone in Ghana’s journey toward sustainable public transport, promising economic and environmental benefits while enhancing the overall efficiency of the sector.
