The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has intensified efforts to encourage the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a safer and cleaner alternative to traditional cooking fuels in the Western region of Ghana.
Through targeted community and market engagements in areas such as Axim, Agona Nkwanta, Kojokrom, and Jubilee, the NPA has been educating residents on the health, safety, and environmental benefits of LPG over firewood and charcoal. These activities included interactive sessions, educational presentations, and the distribution of materials on safe LPG practices.
Grand Durbar Highlights Transition to Cleaner Energy
The campaign culminated in a durbar at the Kwesimintsim Lorry Station, where stakeholders emphasized the need for households to adopt LPG for cooking. Discussions centered on the significant health risks posed by traditional cooking methods, including exposure to smoke that causes respiratory diseases, lung cancer, and other health complications.
Traditional cooking fuels are a major contributor to indoor air pollution, which disproportionately affects women and children. Pregnant women exposed to smoke face risks such as low birth weight in newborns, while children are more likely to suffer from pneumonia. Transitioning to LPG, a clean-burning fuel, can drastically reduce these risks while improving indoor air quality.
Environmental Benefits of LPG
The adoption of LPG also offers significant environmental advantages. Unlike firewood and charcoal, LPG reduces deforestation and minimizes greenhouse gas emissions, making it a sustainable choice for households. The NPA highlighted that its ongoing campaign is part of broader national and global efforts to combat climate change and reduce reliance on biomass fuels.
Cylinder Recirculation Model to Enhance Access
As part of the campaign, the NPA has introduced the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM), a government initiative aimed at ensuring safety and efficiency throughout the LPG distribution chain. This model seeks to enhance accessibility and affordability, making it easier for households to switch to gas.
Nationwide Efforts for Cleaner Energy
The Western Region campaign forms part of a nationwide initiative by the NPA, with similar programs held in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta regions. The initiative aligns with global strategies to mitigate climate change by promoting cleaner energy solutions.
The campaign is being executed in collaboration with Digicraft Advertising and Saudi Arabia’s Oil Sustainability Program (OSP), underscoring a commitment to public health and environmental sustainability.
Commitment to Accessibility and Safety
The NPA has reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that LPG is accessible and affordable across the country while continuing to educate the public on its safe and efficient use. These efforts represent a significant step toward improving public health, reducing indoor air pollution, and safeguarding the environment for future generations.
By adopting LPG, households can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future while enjoying the benefits of cleaner energy solutions.
