Technical Fault on Jubilee FPSO Threatens Power Supply

Ghana’s power sector has suffered a fresh setback after a technical fault on the Jubilee Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel led to the suspension of gas supply to the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at about 4:30 pm.
A statement released by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation ( GNPC) confirmed that while the malfunction had disrupted gas exports, oil production from the FPSO remains unaffected.
“The operator is working diligently to determine the root cause, apply corrective actions, and resume gas delivery to the Atuabo plant as swiftly and safely as possible,” the statement noted. Technical teams are currently on-site addressing the fault.
The outage poses a serious threat to Ghana’s electricity generation, especially in the western corridor, where thermal power plants rely heavily on gas processed at Atuabo. The timing of the incident compounds an already dire situation, as the country’s power sector continues to battle supply deficits, mounting debt, and infrastructural strain.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson recently underscored the gravity of the situation, describing the energy sector as the “greatest economic risk” to the country due to its escalating debts and persistent shortfalls in meeting growing demand.
Complicating matters further is the warning from power producer Karpowership, which has threatened to suspend operations over a $400 million debt owed by the government. Although authorities have begun steps to address the arrears, efforts have yet to yield tangible results, leaving the country vulnerable to power outages.
