UBA Ghana launches 10th edition of National Essay Competition, marks a decade of educational impact

UBA Ghana has announced the 10th Anniversary of its National Essay Competition, a flagship initiative that has empowered Ghanaian students with critical thinking and writing skills while promoting educational excellence.

Launched for the first time in Kumasi at Prempeh College, the anniversary event gathered students from Yaa Asantewaa Girls, Kumasi Anglican SHS, and Kumasi Wesley Girls’ High School, symbolizing the competition’s broad reach and impact.

Since its inception, the UBA National Essay Competition has opened doors for students in senior high schools to win scholarships up to USD10,000 for tertiary education anywhere in Africa, furthering UBA’s mission to nurture the next generation of leaders in Ghana.

Peter Dery, Head of Retail Banking at UBA Ghana, reflected on the milestone: “This 10th-anniversary edition of the National Essay Competition is a proud moment for UBA Ghana. Our mission has always been to empower young Ghanaians to reach their highest potential, and we are honoured to celebrate a decade of positively impacting lives and futures through education under the UBA Foundation.”

Echoing this sentiment, Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service, Mr. Amankra Appiah, praised UBA’s efforts: “Quality education requires the collective input of all stakeholders. For the past decade, the UBA National Essay Competition has provided students not only with a platform to showcase their writing skills but also an opportunity to think critically, explore their creativity, and address pressing issues. These skills are invaluable, and we are proud to see Ghanaian students developing into thoughtful, informed citizens through this initiative.”

The Headmaster of Prempeh College, Very Rev. Levis Asare welcoming the team to the school thanked UBA for the initiative. He mentioned that Prempeh College is proud to be the first destination of the launch outside of the national capital and pledged to work with the teachers to ensure maximum participation from his school while encourage other heads of schools to do same.

The competition invites all Senior High School students across Ghana to submit handwritten essays by December 10, 2024, on the topic: “Climate Change: Discuss the importance of environmental sustainability and actions young people can take in combating climate change.” Winners will receive scholarships and other rewards to support their educational pursuits in any University in Africa.

Since 2014, UBA Ghana has awarded numerous scholarships, creating lasting impacts for students. As UBA commemorates this significant milestone, it remains dedicated to fostering education, promoting literacy, and empowering Ghana’s youth for years to come.
