Prez directs probe into Obuasi mine deaths, calls for calm

The government has expressed sorrow over the deaths of up to eight individuals, believed to be illegal miners, following a violent altercation at a mining site in Obuasi. The incident, which occurred on the concession of AngloGold Ashanti, has drawn national attention, prompting swift intervention from President John Dramani Mahama.

In a statement issued by the Office of the President, the government described the incident as tragic and unacceptable. President Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation to uncover the full circumstances of the clash. He emphasized the importance of holding any individuals found culpable accountable for their actions.

The government has also instructed AngloGold Ashanti to fully cover the medical expenses of the injured and to assist with the burial arrangements for the deceased, signaling a call for corporate responsibility in addressing the aftermath of the incident.

Meanwhile, security agencies have been directed to restore peace in the affected area and implement measures to prevent such clashes from recurring.

This tragedy highlights ongoing tensions in Ghana’s mining sector, where illegal mining activities have frequently resulted in conflicts between miners, security forces, and concession owners.
