TUC calls for peaceful, transparent, and issue-based elections

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana has called on all stakeholders in Ghana’s electoral process to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections as the nation approaches its ninth general election since 1992.

In a detailed statement, the TUC stressed the importance of maintaining Ghana’s democratic integrity despite ongoing economic, social, and political challenges. It urged the government, political parties, the Electoral Commission (EC), the media, and security agencies to act responsibly and uphold their roles in safeguarding the election’s credibility.

Electoral Commission Must Build Trust

The TUC highlighted the critical role of the Electoral Commission in ensuring a credible electoral process. It commended the EC’s efforts so far but noted the lingering mistrust between the Commission and some political parties.

“We call on the Electoral Commission to remain resolute, neutral, and faithful to its constitutional mandate. It must work transparently with political parties through the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) and demonstrate impartiality to inspire confidence,” the statement read.

The labor union also praised the government for meeting its financial obligations to the EC, sparing the usual controversies over funding delays. It urged continued support to enable the Commission to deliver a seamless electoral process.

Political Parties Urged to Focus on National Issues

The TUC called on political parties and their candidates to exhibit maturity and fairness in their campaigns. It stressed the need for campaigns to focus on critical issues affecting Ghanaians, such as employment, cost of living, housing, sanitation, and infrastructure, rather than divisive rhetoric that undermines national unity.

“Elections must not be about what divides us but about what improves livelihoods and strengthens cohesion,” the statement emphasized.

Media and Security Agencies Hold Crucial Responsibility

The TUC also appealed to media outlets to adopt responsible reporting, warning against inflammatory narratives that could incite tensions.

“Our media women and men must contribute to reducing tension and upholding social and political stability as the nation approaches this epic election,” the statement noted.

Security agencies were urged to remain neutral and act decisively against any attempts to disrupt the peace while adhering to legal frameworks.

A Call to Workers and President Akufo-Addo

To workers and their families, the TUC encouraged active participation in the electoral process while warning against being used to perpetuate violence.

“Your jobs will not be secured by fighting for political parties, nor will your pay or working conditions improve through political violence,” the TUC stated.

Addressing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo directly, the TUC reminded him of his responsibility to oversee peaceful elections, emphasizing that ensuring Ghana emerges victorious in the polls would be a lasting legacy for his tenure.

TUC’s Role in Monitoring Elections

The TUC pledged to monitor the elections and hold accountable any individuals or groups seeking to disrupt the process or undermine the will of the people.

As Ghana prepares for its December 7, 2024, general elections, the TUC’s call serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to preserve peace, promote democracy, and address the pressing issues facing the nation.
