UN Chief Calls for Reparatory Justice and Global Support as Africa Marks 2025 Africa Day

As the continent commemorates Africa Day today, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a renewed global commitment to reparatory justice, equitable development, and stronger support for Africa’s economic and technological aspirations.

In a message marking the occasion, the UN Secretary-General described Africa as a continent “rich in heritage, vibrant in diversity, and remarkable in its contributions to our global community,” citing its young population and growing strength in renewable energy and technology.

However, he stressed that the legacies of slavery, colonialism, apartheid, and systemic racism continue to cast long shadows over the continent. “Entrenched inequalities affect Africans and people of African descent to this day,” Guterres said, reaffirming his call for reparatory justice based on accountability, reconciliation, and equity.

This year’s Africa Day is being observed under the theme of confronting historic injustices, a subject Guterres said must be addressed alongside reforms to global systems that continue to disadvantage African nations.

He highlighted the “Pact for the Future,” adopted in September 2024, which calls for increased African representation in global institutions such as the UN Security Council and advocates for comprehensive reforms in the international financial system to improve access to financing and debt relief.

On economic integration, Guterres lauded the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), calling it a game changer for job creation, inclusive growth, and pan-African prosperity. He also emphasized the need for Africa to benefit from the green energy revolution, saying that mineral resources critical to clean energy transitions should primarily benefit African economies and communities.

“Throughout, we will continue standing with Africa to silence the guns, tackle terrorism, and safeguard human rights for all,” he added.

Calling Africa a “global example” amid rising global divisions, Guterres concluded his message with a pledge of solidarity: “Let us recommit to not only addressing past wrongs, but also to building a sustainable future for the people of Africa grounded in peace, dignity, and opportunity for all.”
