US Lifts Visa Restrictions on Ghana, Restores Five-Year Multiple Entry Privileges

Ghana has scored a major diplomatic victory as the United States has officially reversed visa restrictions previously imposed on the country, restoring full consular privileges.

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa announced the development in a statement, describing it as a “big win for Ghana” after months of high-level diplomatic negotiations.

The reversal means Ghanaian citizens are once again eligible for five-year multiple entry visas to the United States, alongside other enhanced consular services. The decision was communicated directly to the minister by Allison Hooker, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, during a bilateral meeting on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“It is good to see healthier and stronger Ghana-US relations,” Mr. Ablakwa said, noting that the outcome underscores the success of sustained diplomatic engagement.

The United States imposed visa restrictions on Ghana and several other countries in July this year, limiting applicants to single-entry visas valid for only three months. At the time, the Trump administration cited long-standing concerns about visa overstays by Ghanaian nationals, particularly students.

With the restrictions now lifted, Ghanaians will once again benefit from expanded access to the US, easing travel for education, business, and family purposes.
